Music diversity for online TV
The new channel privilege
In addition to linear TV offerings, all TV stations have established parallel online TV offerings that are producing independent online-only programs to an ever greater extent. The legally secure use of music in such online-only productions, negotiated in advance on a flat-rate basis, was not covered by the previous broadcasting agreements with GEMA and GVL. The broadcasters had to license and charge for titles individually or resort to limited alternative offers to the GEMA repertoire. With this year's GEMA General Meeting, authors:inside and publishers have now granted GEMA comprehensive rights also with regard to the online-only productions of German TV broadcasters. GVL has also received mandates for extended rights administration. What this means in concrete terms for TV stations and their online editorial teams: unlimited use of music, predictable costs, one-stop store, and the prospect of automated music cuesheets.
