40 years of dual media system
Fit for the future?
In 2024, we will celebrate 40 years of a dual media system and 75 years of the Basic Law.Since the start of private broadcasting, a globally unique media diversity has developed in this country that contributes significantly to the protection of democracy. Private and public media stand for fact-based, journalistic and editorial reporting in times of algorithm-controlled polarisation, filter bubbles, disinformation on big tech platforms and increasing radicalisation in social discourse. In politics, there is a cross-party consensus on the need for substantial reforms to public service broadcasting, which always have an impact on the private pillar of the dual media system. With a view to the envisaged reform treaty, we ask: What reforms are necessary to ensure a sustainably stable dual media system with fair competitive conditions?
