Red Stage

The supersports year

What do we take away from this?

2024 is all about sport with the mega events of the European Men's Handball Championships, Ice Hockey World Championships in the Czech Republic, European Athletics Championships in Rome, European Football Championships in Germany, Olympic Games in Paris and European Women's Handball Championships - on top of classics such as the Bundesliga, Champions League, Super Bowl and Tour de France. Sports fans got and will get their money's worth this year. But it is also a fact that they have never had so much choice of broadcasting channels!

In order to stand out from the jungle of offers, it is more important than ever for programme managers in TV, streaming, online or even outdoor advertising to stage something special for the audience, use new channels or enter into profitable partnerships. This has already been achieved in the course of the Supersport year, in some cases with great success, as the reach data and revenues show.

What will the industry take away from this? Can 2024 become a blueprint for future major appearances in the moving image cosmos? Can further rising costs for sports rights be refinanced through advertising and subscription revenues? In short: What is the future of one of the last "bonfires" in German TV households?
