Artificial intelligence, real art?

AI, responsibility and the question of authorship

Generative artificial intelligence seems to be able to do almost anything: Writing texts like Shakespeare in his prime, composing pop masterpieces like Lady Gaga, and creating images that surpass the portfolio of the most productive artists in their diversity. But what AI produces also needs a basis - namely, training data, whose origins often remain obscure and which often play only a secondary role (if at all) for the users of such tools. In the digital haze of midjourney, stable diffusion, and the like, a whole series of problem areas open up that not only make politicians' heads spin, but also have a very concrete impact on the realities of life and work for artists: Who owns a work of art generated by an AI? How do we want to deal with the fact that AI systems can use artists' works as a starting point for image generation even without their consent? In the session, we will address the question of the level of creation and thus ultimately the question of whether AI-generated works can and should stand on an equal footing with man-made art.
