Matthias Pfeffer

Founding Director, Council for European Public Space

After studying philosophy in Hamburg, I was initially a war reporter in Yugoslavia, Iraq, Somalia and Russia (coup). Later, founding managing director and editor-in-chief of FOCUS TV Produktions GmbH, which I managed for 20 years before moving to Meta Produktion as managing director and shareholder. In 2019, I founded my own company PfefferMedia and work as a writer, consultant and producer. Together with Paul Nemitz, I published Prinzip Mensch, Macht Freiheit und Demokratie im Zeitalter der Künstlichen Intelligenz in 2020. The book made it onto the Friedrich Ebert Foundation's shortlist for "The Political Book of 2020." In October 2021, Human Thought and Artificial Intelligence. An Invitation published by Dietz Verlag. In August, The Human Imperative, Power, Freedom and Democracy in the Age of Artificial Intelligence was published by Ethics International Press, Bradford, UK. In 2022 I was Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Bergamo, on Epistemology of Artificial Intelligence. In the summer semester of 2023, I was a lecturer at the Technical University of Munich on Digitization and Democracy. 2022-early 12023 I was a consultant for the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) on the European media platform A European Perspective. 2023 I founded the non-profit Council for European Public Space, a think-tank for the promotion of the European public sphere.
