Paul Nemitz

Principal Adviser, Europäische Kommission

Paul Nemitz (61) is Principal Advisor in the EU Commission, Directorate-General for Justice and Consumer Protection. Previously, he was Director for Fundamental Rights and Citizens' Rights in the EU Commission from 2011 - 2017. In this role, Nemitz was the lead director for the reform of data protection law in the EU, the negotiations on the EU - US Privacy Shield and the Code of Conduct to combat incitement to hatred and illegal hate speech on the Internet. Nemitz is a member of the Global Council on Extended Intelligence of the worldwide professional association for electrical engineers IEEE and MIT, Boston; the Board of Trustees of the Leo Baeck Institute, New York; and the Board of the Verein gegen Vergessen - für Demokratie e. V., Berlin. He teaches as a visiting professor at the Faculty of Law of the College of Europe in Bruges. Nemitz studied law in Hamburg, Strasbourg and Washington, D.C., and qualified as a judge in Hamburg. He is the author of numerous articles on European law and digitization.
