Penelope Winterhager

Managing Director, JX Fund - European Fund for Journalism in Exile

Penelope Winterhager is the founding CEO of the JX Fund, which supports media operating in exile from countries where independent reporting is no longer possible. The JX Fund collects and curates knowledge and data on the needs and impact of exile media, conducts research, facilitates networking, provides guidance, and offers funding. Its interventions for exile media are based on this data, providing both financial and structural support. Since its founding in April 2022, 90 media outlets have been helped to establish themselves sustainably in exile. As a joint initiative of Reporters Without Borders, the Rudolf Augstein Foundation, and the Schöpflin Foundation, it is supported by a broad alliance of media organizations, civil society groups, and individual donors.
Previously, Penelope served as Chief Creative Officer and Publishing Director at Tagesspiegel, and held leadership positions at the communications agencies Scholz & Friends and FCB as Managing Director and President Germany.
