Karen Hao is a journalist and artificial intelligence expert with a background in engineering. She has evolved from her previous role as an application engineer to an award-winning journalist. With a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Minor in Energy Science from MIT, she brings both technical and analytical skills to her reporting.

In her book “Empire of AI”, Karen Hao sheds light on developments in the field of artificial intelligence and their impact on our society. She draws on her years of insider access to OpenAI and her extensive reporting on technology companies worldwide. Following on from this, her lectures paint a comprehensive picture of the most momentous technological arms race in history. She shows how fundamentally AI will change society and, most importantly, the role we can all play in actively shaping AI to benefit everyone.

Karen Hao has written for prestigious publications such as The Atlantic and directs the Pulitzer Center's AI Spotlight Series, where she trains journalists to report on AI. Her work has been cited by Congress and integrated into academic curricula. She has received several awards, including the American Humanist Media Award and the National Magazine Award for Journalists Under 30.
