Markus Beckedahl

Markus Beckedahl is co-founder and curatorial director of re:publica. He is also founder of the Center for Digital Rights and Democracy. For over 25 years, Markus has been observing, analyzing, and explaining how the internet and key developments in digital technology are shaping our societies, cultural practices, and political decisions. In doing so, he has played a key role in shaping a new field of politics: digital and internet policy. As a prominent political journalist with an IT background, he critically assesses the effects of digitalization on a daily basis and with foresight, challenging decision-makers at all levels to think more equitably, sustainably, and boldly about digital societies. One of the first bloggers, he founded netzpolitik.org, one of the most influential public-interest journalistic media outlets in Germany. Since 2024, he has been publishing an irregular newsletter on digitalpolitik.de.
