Freedom of Expression Does Not Mean Freedom to Insult
Statements Between Tolerance, Ethics, and the Law
What are the limits to freedom of expression – for example, through laws against hate speech or defamation? Where are the ethical lines that go beyond the law but are crucial for social discourse? And how can democratic societies reconcile the protection of freedom of expression with values such as respect and tolerance?
In this high-profile panel discussion, experts from the fields of law, media ethics, and society will discuss such areas of tension in freedom of expression on the basis of current developments and case studies. The discussion will also provide insights into the role of platforms, media, the judiciary, and the public in dealing with controversial statements.
Since its inception, the initiative “Justiz und Medien – konsequent gegen Hass” (Justice and Media – Consistently Against Hate) has been intensively engaged with the protection of freedom of expression and the associated challenges in digital and social spaces. It is a joint project of the “Bayerische Landeszentrale für neue Medien”, BLM (Bavarian Regulatory Authority for Media) and the “Bayerisches Staatsministerium der Justiz”, StMJ (Bavarian State Ministry of Justice) and supports media professionals in promoting respectful coexistence in the digital space.
