On the media's view of a region in a state of emergency
The Middle East war and the latest escalations in the region are devastating on the ground and are constantly reflected in public discourse in Germany. Social media in particular shows how deeply divided opinions are on this trouble spot. It often seems as if there is only black or white, right or wrong. How has this radicalisation of opinions come about? What part does the media play in this social division? In an interview with renowned journalist and Middle East expert Natalie Amiri, we look at the question of whether the media is adequately representing all voices from this crisis-ridden region. Is the media managing to build bridges and strengthen understanding and empathy for the different perspectives, or is the discourse irrevocably poisoned? To what extent does German reporting - also with regard to Germany's special historical responsibility - differ from that of leading international media? In view of the current escalation between Israel and Iran, where is there hope for the region?
