What do we really know?

Realities and the search for truth in crisis areas

In the Middle East, media reporting plays a central role in the perception of the conflict - both locally and internationally. How do journalistic correspondents work in an environment where access to reliable information is limited and the facts often remain unclear? Reporting is in direct competition with social media, where news, opinions and misinformation spread at breakneck speed. This makes the important task of establishing the truth and fact-checking considerably more difficult. How can neutral, balanced reporting succeed under such circumstances? What linguistic and cultural hurdles need to be overcome in order to authentically portray the reality of the people on the ground in Israel and the Palestinian territories? Sophie von der Tann, correspondent in the ARD studio in Tel Aviv, talks about this.
