When authoritarian regimes threaten journalism
In authoritarian states, free journalism is increasingly becoming a dangerous endeavour. One example of this is Turkey, where independent journalists are repeatedly put on trial - under the pretext of security concerns and defence against terrorism. Court proceedings aimed solely at suppressing critical reporting through legal harassment. However, repressive measures not only jeopardise individual journalists, but also the freedom of the press and thus the foundation of democratic societies. How can investigative journalism survive in a climate of constant threat? What strategies are necessary to continue publishing truthful information even under extreme pressure? There is increasing pressure on journalists in authoritarian systems worldwide - a challenge that requires global attention and solidarity.
